The image on the cover of Linux Unwired is cattle ropers. Ropers were cowboys who snared calves and dragged them to the fire for branding. Branding was the act of applying a red-hot branding iron to a calf’s flank to mark the animal. Each ranch had a marking that identified cattle belonging to its herd, and this was thought to discourage theft.

Emma Colby designed the cover of this book, based on a series design by Hanna Dyer and Edie Freedman. The cover image is a 19th-century engraving from The Book of the American West (Bonanza Books, 1963). Emma Colby produced the cover layout with QuarkXPress 4.1 using Adobe’s ITC Garamond font.
