8.5 Performance Results

In this section, we now provide performance results for particular HetNet scenarios to which certain traffic steering and interference management solutions are applied.

8.5.1 Macro and Outdoor Pico Scenarios

The performance gain from using a co-channel deployment of macro cells and outdoor pico cells is summarized in this section. The performance results are obtained from system level simulations following the 3GPP evaluation methodology specified in [4]. The network topology is composed of a regular hexagonal grid of three-sector sites, complemented by one to ten outdoor deployed pico cells per macro cell area – that is total 3 to 30 pico cells per three-sector macro base station. The macro sites use 46 dBm transmit power and antennas of 14 dBi gain, resulting in an Equivalent Isotropic Radiated Power (EIRP) of 60 dBm. The pico cells use 30 dBm transmission power and omnidirectional antennas with 5 dBi gain, that is 35 dBm EIRP. A downlink 2 × 2 MIMO configuration is assumed with dynamic rank adaptation. A non-uniform UE distribution is assumed, with higher spatial density of UEs in the vicinity of the pico cells to model a scenario where the picos are deployed in hotspot areas corresponding to scenario 4b in [4].

The normalized downlink throughput gain from installing pico-eNodeBs is summarized in Figure 8.14. Normalization is performed relative to the case with no pico cells. Co-channel deployment without eICIC and without Range Extension (RE) is assumed. ...
