Knowledge Graphs
Retrieval-augmented generation (Lewis et al., 2020) has made evidence-grounded financial question answering practical, but vector retrieval still operates on isolated chunks. When a question depends on ownership chains, supplier networks, contagion paths, or the timing of relationship changes, similarity search alone is not enough. Those questions require explicit relational structure (see Figure 23.1).
A knowledge graph provides that structure by representing entities as nodes, relationships as typed edges, and identifiers, timestamps, and provenance as properties attached to nodes and edges.
