Kernel transformation

The kernel function is a mathematical function that transforms the data. The reason why it's called an SVM is that the vectors form the boundaries between different groups of data, as shown in this diagram:

Hence, we have placed circles below and the squares above, and the boundaries are the vectors. These vector boundaries are separating the two groups. Vectors are the cases that act like boundaries between groups.
