Chapter 15. Connecting with WiFi

The options we’ve looked at so far have involved having a bridge to connect a device to the internet. In the infrared and RF modules that bridge has been your PC or an Android phone.

In many cases that may not be what you want. Often you’ll need a device that connects directly to your WiFi network, without a separate bridge.

To do this, you’re going to need something to handle the WiFi connection for you. There are many different modules around, but at the moment the cheapest, most easily sourceable modules are based on the ESP8266 (Figure 15-1). The ESP8266 is made by EspressIF.
