Learning From Others, There Are Many Pathways to Goal Achievement

Here are two names you are probably familiar with—Facebook, the popular social-media site, and Zappos, an online merchandiser recently bought by Amazon.com. Both were entrepreneurial start-ups that made it big. But interestingly, they differ in approaches to employee hiring and retention.[67] Is one right and the other wrong?

According to Facebook's founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg, shown here, the firm wants to hire "hackers" with an entrepreneurial side. He's interested in people who want to create new things quickly rather than those who want long-term employment. He likens Facebook to great collegiate sports schools where athletes go to play and excel, while also preparing for later careers in professional sports. When it comes to Internet-based products, he considers Facebook the best place for talented people to learn while they are doing great things. These are the "hackers," and, according to Zuckerberg, the great ones don't "want to stay at one place forever."
