Examination of various products soon leads to the realization that a wide variety of materials and processes have been used in making them, as can also be seen from the example of the automobile shown in Fig. III.1. It will be noted that some products consist of only one part (screws, bolts, washers) or a few parts (pens, eyeglasses, microscopes), while others consist of hundreds or thousands of parts (automobiles, computers) or millions of parts (airplanes, ships).
