CHAPTER 3Concepts and Technologies

3.1 Commonalities between Existing Approaches and MES

Before an approach to solving the demands for the factory of the future identified in Chap. 2 can be developed, the merits of existing standards and technologies that could be called on to solve the problem must be examined. Following an analysis of the existing norms and guidelines, recommendations for a manufacturing execution system (MES) are described in more detail. Subsequently, information systems from neighboring sectors are introduced. Then a comparison is made with the MES. Finally, product lifecycle management (PLM) is examined. Commonalities between both approaches are indicated.
