Project: Splitting Material Assignments

The sample scene file provided in this chapter uses a minimum number of materials. Hence, similar surfaces share the same material. For example, the Leather_Ear_Pad material is assigned to the Pad_L and Pad_R surfaces. Although material sharing makes the adjustment of materials more efficient, it can lead to surfaces appearing poorly lit. By reexamining earlier example renders, it's clear that the pad surfaces suffer from this problem. While Pad_L looks appropriately bright, the back of Pad_R is overexposed and thus appears pure white (see Figure 2.9).
