Simple Network Management Protocol
Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) is a component of the TCP/IP protocol suite. Found within the Application layer of the Operation Systems Interconnection (OSI) model, SNMP was originally developed to monitor and troubleshoot routers and bridges on the Internet. Defined in RFC 1157, SNMP enables you to perform actions such as configuring devices remotely, monitoring network performance, or detecting network faults or inappropriate access to the network. It is essential that you understand SNMP to manage modern networks, and as such, Microsoft expects you to be familiar with SNMP for purposes of the 70-642 exam.
