Describing Elephants
Perhaps, you know the old Hindu allegory of the six blind people who have never seen an elephant, which is portrayed in Figure 12.1. The first blind person, wanting to know what an elephant looks like, feels the trunk. “Ahh, an elephant is like a snake”. The second blind person touches the elephant's enormous side and exclaims, “no, an elephant is like a brick wall”. The third reaches out and puts his arms around a leg, observing “no, an elephant is like a tree”. The others in turn feel the tail, tusk, and ear and reach their own conclusions about the elephant.
