Reporting Year-to-Date Results and Making Forecasts

Like creating plans, reporting year-to-date (YTD) results and making forecasts play a very important role in running learning like a business. Recall the two key questions a manager must answer each month if they are executing the plan with discipline: 1) Are we on plan year-to-date? and 2) Will we make plan for the year? A comparison of YTD results to plan answers the first question, and a comparison of forecast to plan answers the second.

Consequently, reporting the comparison to plan is just as important as reporting the YTD results or forecasts themselves, which is why the management reports in chapter 9 contain columns for all four: YTD results, YTD results compared to plan, ...
