It's worth its weight in gold, in terms of what it allows me to do.

Mit etwas mathematischer Trickserei lassen sich Zahlen sehr kompakt speichern. Dieser Trick nennt sich »Binärcodierung« und bedeutet, dass nicht die Zahl, sondern nur ihre Zweierpotenzen gespeichert werden. Natürlich haben Sie als Datenbank-Benutzer oder -Entwickler nichts direkt mit dieser Technik zu tun, aber ich finde es schon hilfreich zu wissen, was hinter den Kulissen von Access automatisch passiert und dadurch manches besser zu verstehen.
Anstatt also die Zahl 233 wie ein dreibuchstabiges Wort zu behandeln und in drei Ziffern mit je einem Byte Platzbedarf zu speichern, wird der Wert in seine eindeutigen Zweierpotenzen zerlegt. Die Tabelle 8.9 zeigt, wie die Zahl 233 in eine Summe aus Zweierpotenzen zerlegt werden kann. ...
