In Part 2, I'll walk you through a tried-and-true planning process to set up your schedules in Project efficiently, following project-management best practices. You'll learn how to create useful plans that set you on the path to success not only in using Project for planning but also in using it for communicating and tracking. Each step is a building block, so it's important to understand the concepts as well as the functionality of the tool. The core planning steps are as follows:

  1. Enter the work breakdown structure (WBS).

  2. Estimate duration (or work).

  3. Set dependencies/task relationships.

  4. Assign resources (and costs if required).

These steps can be mapped back to the triple constraints of project management: scope, time, ...
