The Query Optimizer is a complex component with many internal features. While it is not always possible to know exactly why the Query Optimizer chose a specific plan, knowing a little about the Query Optimizer’s design can help a DBA or database developer examine any query plan and diagnose any problems. Knowing how the Query Optimizer works can also help reinforce good database design methodologies that can improve the quality of your application and reduce problems in deployment.
