Service Applications Available in the Different Versions of SharePoint 2010
In SharePoint 2007, most services were housed in the SSP (shared services provider), which is no longer available in SharePoint 2010. Instead, in SharePoint 2010 products the “services” are now known as “service applications” and are available in the Central Administrator Application Management page. A service application provides a set of functionalities that can be shared across sites within a farm or across multiple farms and can be enabled or disabled on a web application level.
