The Metadata Management Service (MMS) application is a mechanism to store and control metadata in a centralized location. It represents an important piece of the functionality of the Microsoft SharePoint architecture. In this chapter, we will first take a look at the component pieces of the MMS application and how they interrelate. Next, we will look at how to create the MMS application within your SharePoint farm. We will also walk through the steps of upgrading an existing MMS from 2010 to 2013. Finally, we will walk though some of the common scenarios you will encounter when working with the MMS application.
