Out-of-the-box Master Pages

There are several out-of-the-box master pages provisioned at the time of creating a site collection. However in publishing sites there are two primary master pages, including

v4.master: This master page (shown in Figure 6.56) is the equivalent of the SharePoint 2007 default.master. It works with all SharePoint 2010 sites and pages, including those pages served from the _layouts directory, such as Site Settings pages. The v4.master page includes all the SharePoint user interface changes, including ribbon and social buttons.
