Site and System Master Pages
In SharePoint Server 2007, the concept of site and system master pages was introduced. This enabled you to define a separate master page for publishing pages and one for other pages, including list view, forms, and Web part pages. The same functionality is available in SharePoint Server 2010, although the system master page now also includes Wiki pages. Figure 6.62 demonstrates the assignment of master pages based on separately defined site and system master pages. The site master page applies to all publishing pages, or pages stored in the Pages document library in a publishing site, while the system master page applies to all other pages, including application pages.
