How Page Layouts Work with Master Pages
Chapter 13 demonstrates the process of detaching and reattaching master pages to Wiki and Web Part pages in SharePoint Designer and shows you how to change the master page association on a single page, irrespective of the site’s master page setting. However, you cannot change the master page for a single page layout. Page layouts dynamically reference the site master page based on the CustomMasterUrl property of the SPWeb class. When working with page layouts in SharePoint Designer, the Attach, Detach and Open commands in the ribbon’s Master Page group (Style tab) are disabled.
