Basic Master Page Architecture in SharePoint 2010
SharePoint master pages define common artifacts used throughout SharePoint sites, including site logo and title, navigation, and search. Additionally, in the grand scheme of working with and creating new SharePoint 2010 master pages, there are specific features you must carefully consider, especially the ribbon. To help you realize the involvement of the ribbon in working with SharePoint 2010 master pages, Figure 17.2 shows a wireframe that represents the schema of the v4.master page.
