Restore and Recovery Concepts
In order to better understand how to restore data, it helps to know the terminology and concepts behind the restore process. This section defines terms that are used throughout the chapter and explains the phases of the restore process.
There are three possible phases in a restore operation: the data copy, redo, and undo phases. The term restore is used here in a more specific way to describe the first two phases of a restore operation: the data copy and redo (roll forward) phases. Recovery is the term used to describe the phase that performs undo (roll back) and brings the database online to a recovered state. The following are descriptions of these three phases, which are summarized in Table 15-1:
