As we saw in Chapter 3, one of the responsibilities of the DBA is to tune the system monitor and performance tune the SQL Server solution. When deciding on a tuning methodology there are basically two approaches you can take:

• Proactive approach. You monitor your SQL Server solution and tune the database system when you notice capacity reaching resource limits.

• Reactive approach. You wait until events occur, such as users complaining about slow queries or batch processes failing and then tune the database system as required.
