Digital certificates (sometimes called digital IDs, public key certificates, or, more simply, certificates) are an important component of security in Microsoft Windows. Although they're widely used, they're seldom seen and little understood. In short, a certificate is a record that's used for authentication (that is, for proving one's identity), encryption (scrambling the content of sensitive documents to keep out prying eyes), or both.
