Ethernet on the Bus
Two main standards exist for creating a bus-based Ethernet network, with wonderfully descriptive names: 10Base5 and 10Base2. The IEEE coined these labels, and they each describe three key features of the network, as shown in Figure 3.7:
 
  The 10 signifies an Ethernet network that runs at 10 Mbps.
  Base signifies that 10Base5 uses baseband signaling, meaning that just one channel of communication is on the cable at any time, as opposed to a broadband system (such as cable TV coax), which can have multiple signals on the cable.
  The 5 indicates that 10Base5 cables may not be longer than 500 meters, which is really an indication to the type of cable. The cable length that is 500 meters is called Thicknet cabling. ...
