10 Gigabit Ethernet (10 GbE)
For the highest bandwidth applications, such as interconnecting servers and connecting high-speed switches in corporate datacenters, the 10 Gigabit Ethernet standard, also known as 10 GbE, provides an amazingly fast Ethernet-based networking technology. The IEEE recognizes two 10 GbE standards: 802.3ae for 10 GbE over fiber-optic cabling and 802.3an for 10 GbE over copper cabling.
In addition to speed, most 10 GbE variations are designed to interoperate with Synchronous Optical Network (SONET), making it an ideal choice for connecting local networks to preexisting long-distance fiber-optic links that already use SONET. (Refer to Table 3.1, and see Chapter 8 for more information on SONET.)
