WinPE and the Death of Recovery Console

Windows kept a dirty little secret for years. When you installed Windows from the bootable installation media (usually a CD or DVD), it actually booted up a copy of the ancient DOS operating system. You never saw DOS because an installation screen covered it up, but it lurked beneath the surface (Figure 3-1).
