Chapter 3. Backup and Archive Are Very Different

This chapter starts with what many will consider a basic question: What’s the difference between backup and archive? It might be a basic question but it’s one I’m continually having to explain. I then explain other important concepts about how to keep your backups and archives safe: the 3-2-1 rule, immutability, encryption, air gaps, and disaster recovery plans.

Before you embark on designing, building, or maintaining a data protection system, you really need to have a solid understanding of these terms and concepts, especially those that are often confused with each other or overlooked in the rush to decision. So although you might be tempted to skip this chapter, I would recommend you not do so. There’s probably some gold in them thar hills.

Before We Get Started

I take a very hard line on the difference between backup and archive. To me they are two very separate actions that serve two very different purposes. Having said that, my main goal is to have you understand the different purposes of these actions, because that’s what matters. There are indeed a few products that satisfy both backup and archive needs—and I’m fine with that.

What I’m not fine with is using a product or service that is very obviously a backup product—and only a backup product—but also trying to satisfy archive needs with it.
