At the beginning of the last century, film as a medium was beginning to “take flight,” as Walter Murch so aptly observed when comparing modern editing to the advent of manned powered flight by the Wright Brothers.1 The possibilities seemed limitless despite the fact that cameras were large and cumbersome and the technology to include a synchronized soundtrack had not yet been invented. Film as a mass-market medium became quickly and firmly established throughout the world and it was then up to the artists and engineers to continually innovate.

The foundation for this came as the pioneers, principally Edison and the Lumiere Brothers, settled on certain standards – in this case, 35mm gauge film. ...
