Chapter 4.1Offline Editing
Offline Editing refers to the time when the majority of editing decisions take place. Choices are made regarding scene and take selection, performance issues and building a temp soundtrack. This stage is referred to as “offline” because the editing room may be situated in a home or office, physically removed from the lab or post facility. The footage is sometimes highly compressed using proxies and is therefore not considered suitable for broadcast. In order to remain cost conscious, projects usually edit offline, and then do a final online edit for color and conform once picture-lock has been achieved. This minimizes time spent utilizing very high-end workstations at the post-production facility.
