We frequently associate the term online with searching the internet, and alternately when we are offline it suggests that we may be disconnected from the grid and enjoying some downtime. However, in film terms, offline has a very different connotation as it suggests the editors are working with proxies, apart from a major facility and not tied to a larger network. By contrast, the online edit typically means using the full resolution files requiring all the powerful tools available at a post house or lab with the goal of creating a finished master of the assembled sequence.
