Q: Let’s talk about sound design.

Finch: From a sound design perspective you can look at Apocalypse Now as the birth of the modern film soundtrack. The fact that it was mixed using six-track magnetic dubbers is mind-blowing when you think of what they achieved. That film still sounds amazing! When you’ve got, maybe, five or six dubbers lined up in a machine room, bouncing tracks and combining them in the analog world was cumbersome to say the least.

As ProTools was expanding, that helped to drive the art of sound design. We now have hundreds of tracks at our fingertips. The Macbook Pro is infinitely more powerful than anything used in the 1970s. But ...
