Locking Your Motorola Xoom

Unless you configure some protections and take some precautions, anyone who gains access to your Xoom can use it. If it's lost or stolen, whoever finds it can simply press the Power/Lock button and have free rein to your personal data. If your kids get ahold of it, they can access anything they like as well including email, apps, music, and video. Worse, they can use up your entire data plan watching YouTube videos, send email as you, or update your Facebook status. It's best to protect your Xoom using the security features available.

CONFIGURING A SCREEN LOCK

Several options are available for protecting your Xoom from unauthorized access, and they all require you to input something unique such as a pattern or credential for unlocking the screen. Following are several choices:

  • Off—Never lock the screen. With this option, you press the Power/Lock button and the Xoom's screen appears.
  • Unsecure—Doesn't require a pattern, PIN, or password to unlock the screen. With this option, you must press the Lock icon two times to access the Xoom. This protects the Xoom from being enabled accidentally but offers no protection from unauthorized access. This is the default.
  • Pattern—With this option, you can create your own unique pattern to unlock the screen. After a pattern is established, you unlock the Xoom by dragging your finger across the screen in that way. You may opt to draw a letter on the screen, such as a Z, to unlock the screen, for instance. See Figure 1-17 ...
