Getting Directions with Maps

As you can see, we're moving quickly from easy-to-use apps to more complex ones. This is a great place to tackle Maps. The Maps app enables you to quickly find your present location, get directions to a location, and share the information you acquire with others. You can even view the buildings in 3D or access Street View so that you can see what your destination looks like from the road, if the information is available. You can also easily access driving routes, walking routes, and public transportation routes. And if that isn't enough, you can search for points of interest, landmarks, businesses, and yes, even restaurants, by speaking their names.

USING THE MAPS INTERFACE

Open the Maps app with a single tap, the same way you open any app. As shown in Figure 2-10, the Maps interface has many parts. Take a moment to explore their names. Tap the icons from left to right to do the following:

  • Find your location by tapping the Maps icon in the top-left corner.
  • Search for an address, place, business, or another location by typing a keyword. Tap Search Maps.
  • Tap once on a location to access the Latitude button.
  • Search for a place by giving a voice command. Tap the Microphone icon, which appears after clicking X to clear the current search criteria.
  • Find your location. Tap the Location icon.
  • Locate places around you including restaurants, coffee houses, bars, hotels, attractions, ATMs, and gas stations and to add additional places. Tap the Places icon.
