Chapter 5. Developing New Skills on Your Own
It’s not controversial to say that few organizations have a detailed skills-acquisition plan in place for every employee. Business now moves so fast that most organizations are racing to just keep up with the unprecedented rate of change. Workers now have to take on much of the responsibility for their own training.
In the previous chapters, I discussed the importance of specializing, self-training, and reliable work delivery. Each of these is a pretty decent skill in its own right. However, if you want to move up the value chain, new skill acquisition has to become second nature. Figure 5-1 illustrates the process of moving up the value chain.
