.NET is more than 20 years old now. When any complex system gets to this age, information about where things came from can become lost or harder to find. This appendix provides a brief history. None of this information is needed to program with .NET, but it may provide some context on where certain names came from.
.NET Framework 1.0 was released in 2002 and was built to work only in Windows. There were unofficial ports of .NET, at least parts of it, for Linux and Mac (such as Mono), but .NET Framework remained Windows-only. The last version, 4.8, was released in April 2019.
