On April 18, 2010, a man named Hugo Alfredo Tale-Yax collapsed and lay dying on a sidewalk in Queens, New York. Over the next hour and twenty minutes, more than 25 people walked past and did nothing.

Mr. Tale-Yax was actually a Good Samaritan who ran to the aid of a woman being threatened by a knife-yielding man. Surveillance video from a nearby building captured Tale-Yax pursuing the assailant before collapsing on the sidewalk. The video clearly shows people walking by, some pausing to glance, and one man even stopping to take a picture with his cell phone. In tragic irony, Mr. Tale-Yax died because he saved a woman’s life, while nobody stopped to help save his.
