If one person in the last century comes to my mind over any other as having brought about change in the face of immense adversity and resistance, it is Nelson Mandela. His lifelong fight for freedom and the abolition of apartheid for the people of South Africa demanded great energy, belief, determination, skill, and, above all, an ability to engage the people. To achieve his purpose, he knew it was as important to change the attitudes and perceptions of the government, including his jailers of 27 years, as it was to win the hearts and minds of all the people of South Africa.???
