Success! Well, sort of. Success as a nonfiction filmmaker might not mean that you’re banking the big bucks. But the next funder you approach should be far more willing to back your next project because your previous project reached a primetime audience, won a major award, and/or got European distribution. But success can also be a little rough, because the only way forward from the top is often down. If that’s where you’re now finding yourself, hang in there and don’t forget to enjoy the view up there. You might also find it helpful to repeat to yourself what an old friend once told me: Life works. Be intentional. Move ahead.
