6.4.2 SEMI-ANALYTICAL APPROACH
In this section, we will employ a different approach to solve the eigenmode problem in 2D based on analytical expressions for the mode profiles. This procedure can be used when the lateral geometry consists of regions of piecewise constant permittivity as illustrated in Figure 6.14a. This particular geometry consists of three lateral regions, but the theory can be extended in a straightforward manner to handle an arbitrary number of lateral regions.
