D Glossary
(Absolute) uncertainty: Δu or du the uncertainty calculated either exactly (Δu) or approximately (du); it is absolute as opposed to relative and hence has the units of u.
Approximate error: Ea = (xnew - xold) compares change in successive values during iteration; it has the units of x.
Approximate relative error: εa, (xnew - xold)/xnew * 100 computes change in successive values during iteration and compares this to the latest value; it is a ratio and hence does not have units.
Approximate uncertainty analysis: Calculate du, the derivative of the quantity whose uncertainty is desired, in terms of the derivatives of its factors.
Bound the error: Calculate the remainder term in a Taylor series and choose the value of z(x0 <= ...
