The section on “The Theory of Constraints (TOC),” pp. 182183 explains that constraints or bottlenecks can exist in the form of internal resources or market demand in both manufacturing and service organizations, and in turn play an important role in determining system performance. Review the opening vignette on Microsoft Corporation for an application of TOC in a nonmanufacturing setting, and Table 5.2 for its key principles.
