13.1 INTRODUCTION

Critical Path Method (CPM) was developed by Morgan R. Walker for the E.I. DuPont de Nemours Company to solve project scheduling problems. It was later extended and enhanced by Mauchly Associates. During the same time, a team of engineers working on the Polar’s Missile programme of the US Navy developed PERT.

A project is defined as a combination of interrelated activities all of which must be executed in a certain order to achieve a set goal. In a large and complex project involving a number of interrelated activities requiring men, machines and material, it is impossible for the management to make and execute an optimum schedule just by intution, based on organisational capabilities and work experience.
