26.1 INTRODUCTION
In this chapter we present some remote services for advanced problem optimization. These tools permit us to get a set of resources useful to approach problems easily using the Internet as a channel of experimentation with the optimization algorithms involved.
The chapter is structured as follows. Section 26.2 covers the development of image-processing services via the Internet by means of algorithms implemented by software and reconfigurable hardware. In this way, advanced optimization techniques are used to implement the image-processing algorithms by custom-designed electronic devices, and an open platform is offered to the scientific community, providing the advantages of reconfigurable computing anywhere. Next, in Section 26.3 two web services using time series as optimization subjects are presented. The optimization algorithms are driven by the remote user, and the results are shown in graphical and tabular forms. Finally, Section 26.4 demonstrates the Abacus-GP tool: a web platform developed to provide access to a cluster to be used by researchers in the genetic programming area.
