5. Exadata Compression: HCC Demystified
With his first paper in 1969, Edgar F. Codd, while working at IBM’s San Jose Research Center, launched the field of relational databases.1 Based on his research, Codd created the first relational database management system (RDBMS) called SYSTEM-R. Until this point in time, most information-storing systems were based on tree structured files. He is rightly considered the father of relational databases. Oracle started off as and is still at the core of a relational database, so the constructs that Codd defined and laid out still apply to this day.
