Introduction
Oracle is designed to be a very flexible and configurable sys-
tem. These qualities are absolute necessities for a database
that can run on dozens of different hardware platforms in a
multitude of configurations, supporting an almost infinite
variety of applications and users. In order to achieve the
needed flexibility, Oracle must provide the database adminis-
trator (DBA) with a simple method of specifying certain
operational characteristics of the database in a clear and con-
sistent manner. DBAs specify most of these characteristics by
setting and resetting values for the database initialization
parameters, commonly referred to as INIT.ORA parameters.
The goal is to set these parameters in a way that maximizes
database performance while minimizing DBA maintenance
and resulting downtime.
The purpose of this pocket reference is to provide a clear and
concise summary of the initialization parameters available in
Oracle. This book is not a tutorial; rather, it provides a quick
and easy way of finding the information you need when you
need it.
Because Oracle Corporation is constantly improving and
updating their database product, there are several versions of
Oracle commonly in use today. For that reason, I’ve included
initialization parameters for the following versions of Oracle:
Oracle8i
Oracle9i
Oracle Database 10g
