Debugging Mechanisms

There are many debugging techniques; which one to use typically depends on the nature of the problem at hand. Here, we will look at some of the techniques that can help aid in debugging kernel problems. Table 16-1 provides a brief overview of some of the mechanisms we will discuss in this chapter.

Most of the preceding debugging technologies are included by default, but are not always enabled in the kernel by default because they may cause interference with the running kernel or hardware devices, or may pose a security risk, as it may be possible to obtain sensitive contents of the target’s memory.
