Chapter 14. Multicast Routing Protocols

In this chapter, we compare and contrast the multicast protocols that have been developed for the Internet: DVMRP, MOSPF, PIM Dense, PIM Sparse, and CBT. This chapter builds on the basic information presented on multicast routing in Chapter 9. In particular, throughout this chapter, we use the multicast network shown in Figure 9.1 and the corresponding source-based trees and shared trees in Figures 9.3 and 9.4 to illustrate the operation of each protocol.

As summarized in Table 14.1, these protocols can be split into two categories: those that produce source-based trees and those that construct a shared tree.
