Welcome to the enigma of filmmaking. Audio! Yes, that’s right, it’s a real pain because guess what? None of us are audio engineers and most likely never will be. That’s OK. It all comes back to that modern-day filmmaker who wears many hats on set and in postproduction.

Maybe you have dabbled in audio editing or plan to. I’ll say up front that I’m not an audio engineer. I know what I’m doing and I understand what to do, but I’ve sat with enough real, trained engineers to respect the title of audio engineer. It’s a very difficult trade to learn—and if you want to learn it, by all means, go for it. Audio editing is its own lifetime study, just as video and film editing are lifetime studies.
