Synopsis
The Actions menu is shown in Figure 11-3. It contains only two commands required to work with Outlook’s Journal component: New Journal Entry and Forward. These items are discussed in the following sections.

Actions → New Journal Entry
The Actions → New Journal Entry command opens the Journal Entry dialog, shown in Figure 11-4. The keyboard shortcut for this dialog is Ctrl+N from within the Journal component; Ctrl+Shift+J opens a blank Journal Entry from anywhere within Outlook.
Two Ways to a New Entry
In all Outlook components, the context menu displayed when you right-click a blank region of a view always lists a New command as the first item. There’s a quicker way to open a new entry form, however—simply double-click the same blank region you used to invoke the context menu.

As with all other Outlook entry forms, the more information you add when creating a new record, the more leverage you can gain in mining the data later. When creating a new Journal entry, the Subject (see Figure 11-4, Item 1) field is important, as this is the “title” you see in all icon and table views. Name your Journal entries with unique and easily identified subjects.
